As we are going to celebrate Fathers Day this month of June, I am thrilled to think of animes that featured Father and Son relationship. Here’s my list of the top anime:
Growing up as a kid, Naruto is an orphan living alone, the Father figure that he has who provides his daily needs is Sandaime Hokage (meaning: Third Fire Shadow) Hiruzen Sarutobi. Another father figure to him is Jiraiya, one of the three “Legendary Sannin” his master who taught him most of his jutsu including the rasengan. He only met the imprint of his real father in his subconcious, Minato Namikaze the yondaime hokage (meaning: Fourth Fire Shadow) or Konoha’s Yellow Flash when he tried to break the seal of his nine tailed fox. During this time Naruto punches his father because his frustrated that Minato sealed the Nine Tails within him. Then during the fourth shinobi world war when the four hokage are ressurected, Minato warp away the ten tails to save Naruto and the allies. Naruto admired Minato for his heroic deeds even before knowing that he is his father, upon learning that he is his father he was so proud and felt it was his responsibility to make his parents sacrifices worth it.
During the early part of the anime, Isshin Ichigo the father of Kurosaki Ichigo is seen as goofy and fun-loving character with loud voice and a big smile. He is the sole provider of his son Ichigo and his daughters Yuzu and Karin. He’s prone to attacks from his son due to various reasons like being late for dinner and waking him up. But as the anime progresses we will see that he is one of the powerful guys, a former captain of the 10th division and head of one of the five noble houses. Very capable of protecting his family against any enemies. He helped Ichigo to be stronger by teaching him the finGetsuga Tensho. “Live well, age well, and go bald well. And die after me. And. . . if you can, die smiling. Don’t hesitate to act. Sadness is a cool thing to shoulder, but you’re still too young.”– Isshin Ichigo
This anime is about Gon with a lifetime goal of finding his father Ging, he aims to obtain the hunter license in able to find the whereabouts of his father who left him with his aunt Mito while still a baby. He wants to know what would cause his father to choose his profession as a Hunter over being a parent. They only met for the first time after Gon was healed from his battle with Neferpitou. The anime ended when Gon found Ging on top of the world tree and they discussed about Gings’ life experiences. “You should enjoy the little detours to the fullest. Because that’s where you’ll find the things more important than what you want.” – Ging Freecss
This is one of the anime wherein, father and son tandem had always been fighting side by side most of the time. Goku trained his son Gohan to be a fighter and Gohan trained his younger brother Goten during his younger years since Goku died when Goten was a child and Goku was only resurrected when Goten was already seven years of age. With the saiyan blood running in their veins, Goku and Gohans’ relationship is like a coach wanting his student to be stronger, while Gohan looks up to his father like a hero and model to strive for. There’s rarely a “slice of life” episodes on this series. “Power comes in response to a need, not a desire”
